  • Village Fete:
The social committee are thinking of changing the format for the 2009 fete. The idea is to have the traditional fete on Saturday afternoon starting at say 2pm.
However, in the evening, in the marquee there would be a do with a live band along with either a hogroast or barbecue. We are thinking of either a Carribean or Country & Western theme. There will need to be a charge for this event. What are the views of the village? Would you support such an event.

  • Hi,

Just wondered what peoples views were on the Thornton Hall farm building another building two storys high in aluminum to increase their visitors site and caravan park.
I think Thornton is a nice quiet relaxing village and have enough traffic with the already existing visitors farm.
You can view plans at http://bopdoccip.pendle.gov.uk/PlanApp/jsp/RDfullPlanApp.jsp?PlanningApplicationNumber=13/08/0503P .

  • Looking for any information re my ancestors. I have traced them back to William Cowgill who married Susanna Ridehough. William was the son of Joseph Cowgill (b1763) and Jane Hargreaves who married in Kildwick (1788). I am trying to trace Josephs parents who I think might be Joseph(b 1729) and Mary. Anyone help? • I am researching my family tree and was fascinated to see the family history section of your website, especially the story about poor Henry Bell and his sad demise at the Rock. He was my great great great uncle! I would be very grateful for any information about the 4th generation Bells, in particular Ellen Bell (sister of Henry) or their parents Henry Bell and Ellen Speak. If you have any useful information I would be delighted and very grateful to hear from you. Catherine Webb (chwebb@hotmail.co.uk)

  • We have a resource i.e. the Cricket/Playing Field down Booth Bridge Lane that is under utilized.
I believe there are many activities that it could be accommodated at this venue.
Archery, rounders, flying model aircraft, children games etc etc.
Cricket is generally only played on this land on a Saturday [see Event Calendar for details]
and is therefore lying underused the rest of the time.
What would you like to do?
Make contact through this message board or email me direct roger.staniland@birse.co.uk

  • Villagers of Thornton in Craven, we have a resource that most villages in the country would die for. That is the playing field down Booth Bridge Lane, probably better known as the cricket field. This piece of idyllic land was left to the village, not the cricket club, to do with what ever they so wished.
I have suggested to the Village Hall committee and the Parish Council that we should build a new Village Hall / Pavilion along the northern boundary of this land and have produced some draft plans. I am assured that funds can be obtained for this development and as it is North Yorkshire Council land our request for this use is unlikely to be opposed.
Well what do you say. The Village Hall Committee is undecided. Car Parking would not be a problem. Children’s Parties would be wonderful.
Please let me know what you think via this message board.
If you would like to contact me directly, then it roger.staniland@birse.co.uk

  • Applications for up to £20,000 of funding from the North Yorkshire Aggregates Grants Scheme are now being invited.

Has anyone got any ideas for projects which would enhance the village? If so please let the Parish Council know.

Priority projects will be those that increase participation in volunteering and community-based activities and those that conserve and enhance biodiversity, natural habitats and the natural and built environments.

  • Following the Village BBQ & Funday, the social committee are keen to here from anyone with ideas or suggestions to enhance this event next year. The point is not to raise funds although individual groups from within the village are free to do so, but to make it a fun day out without being too hard work to run.

  • I'm hoping to move to the Skipton area soon and don't think i have fully seen Thornton-just a couple of roads up off the main road. After browsing through your web site, i think there must be more to your village than meets the eye. What would be the best way to get involved in the community and meet people, if I moved into the area? Are there always plenty of things going on? Please would you e-mail me at viv.holmes@stees.nhs.uk
Thanks a lot, and perhaps I'll meet you all before too long!

  • My name is Heidi Edmondson and I am trying to research the Edmondson family tree. I have been to the family history page and listened to Mrs Gladys Bowker talk about William Edmondson farmer (my great grandfather) delivering and giving the kids rides on his horse.I know that William is buried in Earby with his wife Gertrude nee Parker whom had connections with Malsis School. My Dad remembers that William was married twice, but doesn't know anything about his first wife, they had a daughter Dorothy. I have been to Thornton Churchyard and found a grave stone with William Edmondson died 26.12.1894, Jane died 15.7.1885 and Mary died 27.1.1870, I am not sure if they are related to me but I am missing a generation if they are. I am trying to find information regarding John (Willie) William Edmondson and his wife, who would be William's father. I know they had several farms and butchers shops in and around Thornton and Earby. If anyone has any information regarding John William or any of the Edmondson family I would be very grateful if you would let me know, please email me at heidi.edmondson@gp-B82053.nhs.uk. Thanks very much.

  • MATRIX SPEED SIGN.
I was wondering what people of the village think of Thornton having a Matrix speed sign. I was up the Lake District this week and on my travels came across a speed sign which flashes the speed you are doing.
Anybody think we should have one or two. Please post your views.

  • I am doing my family tree. The Watson family, I have so far, starting with George Watson born in Earby in 1811 married to Ann born in 1816. They had 10 children; Betty 1832, Martha 1834, Daniel 1836, William 1838, John 1842, Thomas 1844, James 1848. To cut it short, Thomas married a Jane and they had six children, Geroge William 1872, Alfred 1873, Christopher 1875, Jane A 1877, Daniel 1880 and Mary A 1882. Now Jane A married a William Peacock and they lived at 20 Cowper street. I have been trying to find out where my Great Grandfather comes in, William Watson, born in Skipton - trouble is he was sent to Macau, where he met Catherine Goulbourn and then my Grandad William Arnold Watson was born in Hong Kong (1897) I am trying to find out where they lived when they came back from Hong Kong, and who were William Arnolds (Bills) brothers and sisters.
Also does anyone know if George Watson born 1811 in Earby is brother to Francis Watson also born in Earby in 1800, they lived next door, his wifes name was Jane and they had six children; Elizabeth 1832, Hartley 1834, Sarah 1837, Ann 1840, Ellen 1842, and William 1846.
My mom remembers going to skipton with her Dad, William Arnold Watson and visiting an Aunt in the Peacocks household, that is why I know I am on the right track. Anyone out there connected in any way, and has any information? Thanks Robyn

  • Hi, I am tracing my ancestors the Tillotson's that lived at the Hague. John Tillotson married Lucy Hargreaves in 1747 at T in C but married again after her death in 1751. I cannot find his second marriage to Mary or christening records for 2 of his siblings William and Ellen. Also cannot find the christening record for Hargreaves Tillotson who was born in Carleton 1816/1817. Have checked the Carleton parish records but not there. Anyone out there researching the same or anyone that can offer advise it would be greatly appreciated. You can contact me on eil50@hotmail.com
